01-07 Genesis Chapter 7

Chapter 7 - The Flood
"In Noah's 600th year, 2nd Month, 17th Day of the Month the Flood came."

Noah collected 2 of each kind of unclean beast, 7 of each kind of clean beast, 7 of each kind of flying animal. And then 7 days prior to the start of the Flood, Jehovah orders Noah and his family and the representative sample of animals into the Ark and shuts the door.

Jehovah tells Noah it will rain for 40 days and 40 nights.

In Noah's 600th year, second month, seventeenth day of the month the rains came and the springs of the earth broke open and deluge started and continued as prophesied for 40 day and 40 nights.

The waters rose till they covered he highest mountains by 15 cubits. All this time the Ark floated, with Noah, his family and the representative sampling of animals.

All that lived on dry ground that were not in the Ark died.

The waters covered the earth for 150 days.

The interesting pattern here is that of God telling his people in advance certain details of what is about to happen so his people know and understand and do not unduly worry.

The source of the waters for the Flood were two-fold: (1) The waters that rained down; and, (2) the waters previously entrapped within the earth.

For the water source from above, I wonder if the the earth at one time had ice rings, like Saturn; and if this could have been a source of flood water.

Earlier in Genesis during the Creation, the statement is made that God separated the waters above from the waters below with an expanse and the expanse he called "heaven". In this context "heaven" probably refers to our atmosphere (I know the Bible refers to 3 "heavens", but no real definition is given for "heaven 2" and "heaven 3".

Whatever the source for the waters of the Flood, something major happened to the earth during this time. Life spans in the times before the flood were quite long.

After the flood, men's life spans decreased rapidly over a few centuries down to that we experience today.

More on this when we get to the ancestry of Abraham and his Great(^4th) Grandfather Peleg.
